U-Turns

  • Have your dog next to you on leash, then walk a few steps
  • Place a high value treat on their nose then make a 180-degree turn and reward your dog for walking back with you.
  • Repeat a few times then add a verbal cue like "This way" or "Turn"
  • Once your dog reliably turns start to fade out the lure and instead, mark the second they turn and reinforce them while walking the other way.
  • Practice in different locations with increasing distractions to build confidence.
  • Apply the U-turn early, before your dog gets too focused or triggered by a distraction.
